Barcelona crowned 2024/25 La Liga champions

Barcelona are the 2024/25 La Liga champions after a convincing victory over Espanyol in the Barcelona derby at their rivals’ stadium sealed the title. A dominant season from Hansi Flick’s men sees them reclaim the summit of the Spanish top flight for the 28th time in their history.

Barcelona are the La Liga champions for the 28th time in their history. A thrilling season has seen the Catalans clinch the title in style, with their win against Espanyol making it mathematically impossible for Real Madrid to catch them, even with two games remaining.

The Blaugrana conquered the league after registering 27 winsfour draws and only five defeats from 35 matches in a memorable season for them. After years of struggle, Barcelona seem to have finally found their way back to the top, with Hansi Flick at the heart of their revival.

The German coach landed in Catalonia in the summer of 2024, replacing dismissed boss Xavi Hernandez. Tasked with bringing stability to the team, Flick exceeded all expectations, winning a domestic treble in his first season in charge, and doing so emphatically.

Barca’s campaign started strongly, but two miserable months of November and December saw them finish off the calendar year in second, eight points behind Real Madrid on matchday 18. But what came next was just another of Barca’s renowned spirited fightbacks.

By the end of February, they had already cut the deficit to Real Madrid, levelling with them on 51 points after their 1-0 win against Rayo Vallecano on matchday 24. And they have never let go of the top spot since, carrying on their remarkable run to stay unbeaten in La Liga since New Year’s.

A team filled with stars

Hansi Flick’s La Liga-winning squad this year has seen several standout players. Wojciech Szczesny, lured out of retirement to replace the injured Marc-Andre ter Stegen, has been a solid presence between the sticks since his debut in January, racking up 15 league appearances.

Flick’s talisman is without a doubt Pedri. With 33 league starts – the most out of any player in the team – the midfield maestro’s importance often goes under the radar due to a big chunk of his work involving linking up the play and creating chances from deep. Nevertheless, he still has nine goal contributions in La Liga.

Up front is where the heavyweights are. Robert LewandowskiLamine Yamal and Raphinha: a cracking trio that has never stopped shining with the Blaugrana jersey this season.

Fans were prepared to mourn the end of the Messi-Neymar-Suarez era for a lifetime, however, the newfound trio have them looking forward to a bright future. 51 goals and 24 assists in Spain’s top tier between them, and still two games to go to add to the remarkable tally.

Lewandowski will soon be 37, but it seems as though he still has many years in him at the top level. The Poland captain is Barcelona’s top scorer this season, and is also three goals shy of Kylian Mbappe’s 28 in the La Liga goalscoring charts. That said, there is still time for him to reclaim his crown.

Yamal has had the football world in awe since making his official Barcelona debut on April 29 2023, but he has upped it to a different level this year. Eight goals and 18 assists in the top flight, tied with dazzling dribbling skills and a bright future for the 17-year-old sensation.

Raphinha was heading towards the exit door just last summer, with his move from Leeds to Barcelona looking like a bust. But Flick never stopped believing in the Brazilian, who soon enough started to believe in himself.

Ballon d’Or shouts left and right with 34 goals and 22 assists across all competitions to back his case. His performances in the Champions League have been the standout, but his La Liga season has been just as lethal: 18 goals and nine assists from 34 appearances.

Among the squad, other figures have also significantly contributed to Barcelona’s success this season. Jules Koune, Pau Cubarsi, Inigo Martinez, Alejandro Balde, Eric Garcia and Gerard Martin in defence; Frenkie de Jong, Dani Olmo, Gavi, Marc Casado and Fermin Lopez in midfield; Ferran Torres and Pau Victor in attack.

Just the beginning

Barcelona conclude the 2024/25 season with the Spanish Super Cup, the Copa del Rey and the La Liga in their trophy cabinet. They were inches away from a potential quadruple, but just missed out on a spot in the Champions League final after losing a semi-final tie for the ages against Inter Milan earlier this month.

Nonetheless, their European blow does not take away from their achievements this season. If anything, it proved that they were just getting started, and that this campaign is just the foundation for what’s to come in the next years.
